Great Article from Rodale “Why Women Shouldn’t Eat Factory Farmed Chicken”

A wonderful article on “Why Women Shouldn’t Eat Factory Farmed Chicken” by Rodale. Their main idea of this article is the factory farmed chickens are contaminated with E.coli and the occurrence of UTI’s in women. The study found these factory farmed chickens are resistant to antibotics as are women who comsumed the chicken from the factory farms, thus having more trouble treat UTI’s. Read the entire article on Rodale’s website. I will also add, it is best if everyone (men, women, and children) eat chicken which is either organically raised or better yet from a local farmer! There are many other problems with factory farms than just E.coli problems. I encourage you to do your own research and most importantly check out Local Harvest for local farmers and chicken producers near you!

Live USDA Webinar TOMORROW on New and Local Regional Food Systems Resource Tool

Tomorrow, February 29, 2012, at 2pm EST, the USDA is to Unveil the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass program. New web resource maps USDA support for Local and Regional Food Projects, and Highlights Business Opportunities.

Below is the remainder of the email I received:

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27, 2012- On WEDNESDAY, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will unveil the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food (KYF) Compass via a live webinar. This KYF Compass is an interactive web-based document and map highlighting USDA support for local and regional food projects and successful producer, business and community case studies. The Secretaries will also discuss how local and regional food systems across the country offer economic opportunities for local farmers, ranchers and food entrepreneurs while growing the number of farmers, expanding healthy food access and building strong infrastructure systems.
In September 2009, USDA launched the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative to coordinate USDA resources and expertise on local and regional food systems. The initiative also encourages Americans to learn more about U.S. agriculture and connect with the farmers, ranchers and growers who are producing their food.  The KYF Compass documents the ways in which USDA has coordinated across its 17 agencies and additional offices, enhanced transparency and met congressional mandates from the 2008 Farm Bill on local and regional food.
Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012     2 p.m. EST
WHAT: Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will unveil the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass and highlight USDA's support for local and regional food opportunities, which has spurred economic opportunity for farmers and ranchers across the country.
WHERE: The webinar will be live-streamed at http://www.usda.gov/live. You can participate live by asking questions on Twitter to @usda and using the hash tag #KYF2.
Access to the Compass and interactive map as well as additional information will be unveiled on February 29 at http://www.usda.gov.

Tell me your thoughts on this! I love the fact the local farmers are being acknowledged; however, I am very cautious of the government becoming involved too much in the local farmer’s business. I plan on listening to the audio today (hopefully, with no interruptions). I will try to post my thoughts and feelings later this week!  I encourage you to listen as well and form your own opinions!

Shoveling Made Easier for Women

Organic Gardening Magazine recently had an article about two women who were avid gardeners in search of tools and equipment that fit their bodies and their needs. In 2008, they formed Green Heron Tools which is a garden tool company specializing in women’s tools. I have never tried their tools, but was very interested in hearing about them. I know I have always noticed how awkward a shovel or spade is to me, now I know more of the reason why.

The article discusses the reasons women use tools such as shovels or hoes differently than men do. The center of gravity for a woman is closer to her hips because of her wider pelvis. A man’s center of gravity is higher as they have broader shoulders. Proportionally, women have greater lower-body strength than men, but less upper body strength meaning women rely on the power of their legs for strenuous tasks such as digging.

These women (Ann and Liz) came up with HERShovel which is a shovel/spade combination ergonomically engineered to maximize the power of a woman’s body and make digging easier.

You can read the entire article “Women’s Work” on Organic Gardening Magazine Website. There is even a video called Shoveling Made Easy at the end of the article which demonstrates the correct method for shoveling. You can also learn more about Green Heron Tools at their website.

There are several different projects which are wonderful for reusing/recycling/upcycling your unwanted items. Today, my children and I made Origami  Envelopes from old calendars. You can see in the pictures the different ones we made. I also made a plain white paper one just to see how it looked compared to the others. There are many other ideas on the website for recycling plastics, clothing, newspaper, and more! Hope you enjoy the website as much as my family has! Free You Tube Videos for the Home

As a mom of seven with number eight on the way, I am always looking for ways to save especially on learning new things! You Tube is a great source for finding FREE videos for your home! Whether it be homemaking, homesteading, homeschooling, etc. you can find videos to learn just about anything on You Tube. You also have to be very careful of the things on You Tube which are NOT appropriate for you, your home, or anyone for that matter. Anyway, below are a few of my You Tube Favorites which I hope will help you as well!

Moms Into Fitness- There are many videos by Lindsay Brin for exercising during pregnancy as well as getting your body back after pregnancy. As always, get permission from your doctor or midwife before beginning any exercise routine whether you are pregnant or not! Lindsay also has a blog and a Moms Into Fitness website. On the Moms Into Fitness website, you can sign-up for four free videos which will correspond to the stage you are during pregnancy or post partum.

Connecting Threads- There are many videos for quilting and sewing on you tube. Connecting threads is only one channel available. Currently, my daughter and I are learning English Paper Piecing. Whether it in on Connecting Threads channel or some other channel, you can find nearly any tutorial for any sewing or crafting skill you may want to learn or need help refining!

Craig Duncan Fiddle- Currently, my oldest son who is ten and LOVES fiddling, is learning new fiddling techniques and songs through Craig Duncan on you tube! IT has been a great way to keep up lessons during our transition stage until we can find a teacher in our new location! I have been searching individually for piano tutorials for my daughter, but have not been as successful. Fortunately, her daddy and I can play piano, and can help her when she needs it! There are many other resources for homeschoolers as well!

Homesteading- I also do individual searches for anything I may want help with or learn how to do concerning homesteading. Currently, I am not doing much as far as the homestead, but there are a few homesteading videos which may be of interest to readers. Country Grain Mill-Bike Powered (We are thinking of trying this as we have a grinder like the one in the video.), Ivan Kinsman’s Channel has lots of great videos on how to Homesteading, and Homsteading Prepper’s Library Series from Michigansnowpony

Gluten Free Tips with Amy- Amy has lots of great Gluten Free tips and recipes on her channel! There are many more recipes and tips for Gluten Free lifestyle on You Tube as well!

These are only a few of our favorite You Tube videos which we are using now or have used in the past or will use in the future. Please do not forget what a wonderful resource You Tube can be. Just so you know, I get NO compensation for mentioning You Tube. I just wanted to pass the message along to my readers in hopes to help them!

Gluten Free, Sugar Free Mocha Truffle Cake

Sugar Free Mocha Truffle Cake

Above is a picture of the Gluten Free and Sugar Free Mocha Truffle Cake which I made for my family on Valentine’s Day! It was VERY easy to make, and EVERYONE LOVED it! I adapted the Mocha Truffle Cake Recipe from the recipe in the January 2012 All You Magazine. The recipe was already flourless. We did add a little Powdered sugar on top, but it is completely optional which would make it sugar free with my modifications! You can see the original Mocha Truffle Cake Recipe on the All You website. Below are my modifications!

I did not have the exact ingredients, so my cake was quite an alteration, but I did follow the outline given on the All You website.

Ingredients (I used)

  • 2 1/4 cups Hershey’s Special Dark Cocoa plus 3/4 cup oil (I used olive oil.) The original recipe called for 12 oz. semi sweet chocolate
  • 1 cup maple syrup
  • 1 packet instant decaf coffee (Starbucks is what I had from a free sample in the mail a while back as we do not drink coffee.)
  • 12 tbs. (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 6 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Strawberries, Confectioner’s Sugar, and/or Whipped Cream for garnish We did not use any whipped cream. My oldest daughters (ages 9 and 4) decorated the cake.

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9 inch cake pan. ( I used a round, glass pan. The original recipe calls for a Springform pan and parchment paper.)
  • Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. (I use my Kitchen Aid mixer and wire whisk attachment.) Minx thoroughly making sure all butter is melted and incorporated.
  • Pour batter into pan and evenly spread. Bake until set in center 55 to 60 minutes. Cake will appear dry on top and slightly cracked around the edges. Let cool in pan on a wire rack for 20 minutes. Cake may sink in center (mine did slightly). Run a thin knife around edges of pan to loosed or remove from pan. I did not remove mine. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled at least 2 hours. I put ours in the freezer for about 30 minutes while we ate our supper. I did not get it baked earlier in the day as I had planned.
  • If desired, garnish cake just before serving.
  • Enjoy!

Exciting Announcements

image

I have several exciting announcements for my readers.

1st- We are expecting BABY NUMBER 8! YAY! The baby is due in August! As usual, we do not find out what we are having. I am doing well. I just have bouts of tiredness!

2nd- I have a goal to move this BLOG to a .com address by March 1st. I will give you more details as the time gets nearer. I have had some problems with Google Ad Sense and Blogger, and NEED to have MY OWN domain!

3rd- In the upcoming months, I will not be focusing on coupon deals. Our family has relocated for my husband’s job. This move is only TEMPORARY, but because of the move, we are no longer in TN. Not being in TN makes it difficult to keep a heads up on all the happenings there. When we move back in a few months, I will focus on UGO Deals, Earth Fare, and other stores again. However, for now, I feel led to focus on helping YOU, my readers with various tips on home life! Most of the attention of my blog is going to move to the topics of Homemaking, Homesteading, Homeschooling, Homebirthing, Gluten Free Living, Organic and Natural Living, and Being A Good Steward of all God has given us. I hope you will continue to read the blog! I will occasionally throw in some good UGO deals as I do look at their ad most every week even though there is NOT one anywhere near me! I may also have a few other grocery store deals which I feel may be beneficial to my readers. I also want to focus on giving, not only to my readers, but to others. If you notice, many of my most recent posts have been about donating! I think it is important to help others in need! Let me know if there are any specific things you would like to see added to the new upcoming blog!

Thanks again for reading! I love and pray for all my readers whether I have ever talked with you or not! May God bless ALL of you! Smile
