Questions About Homebirths- Question 3

Aren’t you scared something terrible will go wrong?

Babies have been being born since the beginning of time! In fact, they were first delivered by midwives which is recorded in the Old Testament!  Having a baby is a completely NATURAL process! However, there are those women who have health problems and should not risk a home birth! One of the first things to do is to make sure you are a candidate for homebirth. Once you have found out you have no health problems which put you at risk, then you can choose your midwife. As I said before, your midwife is not perfect, but you should be able to trust her judgment as to whether or not you can have the baby at home and whether or not you need to be transported to the hospital.

As for me, I have put my trust in the Lord to take care of  the baby and of me! He has sent a wonderful husband and midwife to help with our care and to make sure we are progressing the way we should and there are no problems. My midwife does have many of the capabilities as a hospital. She has oxygen and IVs if needed as well as other medications to prevent or stop hemorrhaging. I do not ignore the fact problems can arise during any birth whether it be at home or in the hospital or at a birthing center. I contact 911 before the birth to let them know I will be having a baby at home and to be ready in case of an emergency. I do live a fair distance from a local hospital, so it will more than likely be best for my husband or midwife to drive the baby and me to the hospital if needed. All of these scenarios are in my birth plan!

In addition to putting my trust in the Lord, and praying He give my midwife direction and help in my care, I also try to eat correctly and exercise in order to make the birth easier and prevent problems. Furthermore, I take vitamins and other supplements to help aid in a safe birth. I know women who have had several children at home and NEVER had a problem, but I also know women who have had several children at home and have had some problems.

Most of the problems can be prevented or possibly even detected before you go into labor. For example, if you continue to have high blood pressure or low iron or high blood sugar, etc. your midwife is going to anticipate possible problems with your birth.

I do not dwell on what might happen! I have read and researched possible problems, but I cannot let myself dwell on those during pregnancy or labor. Yes, I need to be prepared, but I put my trust in the Lord to take care of the baby and me. A great husband and midwife are also essentials to having a healthy, happy, and safe homebirth!

  • And it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also. Genesis 35:17
  • And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. Genesis 38:28
  • And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive? And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them. Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.Exodus 1:15-21
  • There is never a midwife mentioned at Christ’s birth. So, he was either delivered by one not mentioned or by Joseph and Mary. Child birth is completely natural!
