I am thrilled this week to feature a local Knoxville, Tennessee blogger! Her name is Gabrielle and her blog is called Couponing In Critical Times.

She is also dedicated to Organic Shopping and deals! She keeps up with Three Rivers Market which is on Broadway in Knoxville. It is quite a drive for me, but those of you who are in that area may be interested in stopping by to check it out!

Gabrielle blogs about everything frugal including couponing, food preservation, gardening, buying local, protecting the environment, and much more. She will be a great source of information for those of us who are in Knoxville and the surrounding area!

She and I seem very similar in that we both have chosen the same blog lay out! :) There are also many other similarities as well you will notice the similarities if you read very much of her blog. Please check out her blog for more information!

Organic Finds at UGO

100_0180

I found some awesome organic deals at UGO on Saturday! I went to pick up some overalls for Timmy’s fiddle performance on the 25th. I had forgotten about UGO being near that particular store. This UGO is bigger than the one I go into most often. This UGO has fresh meat and produce and a lot bigger selection of other items. UGO does not take Manufacturer coupons.

I spent $10 for all of the above items! It would have have easily been $30 or more regularly priced. Check out your UGO, you never know what you might find! You can find a location near you by going here. I post the latest specials every Wednesday morning!

Walgreens Trip Total spent $0!

100_0172

Walgreens was my only shopping trip for groceries this week. Although, I may stop by UGO or Kroger today.

Toilet Paper: $2.99

Batteries: $5.99

Stainless Steel Ice Cream Scoop: Clearance $0.50

Stainless Steel Slotted Serving Spoon: Clearance $0.50

Total before coupons was $9.98

I used $9 in RR and a $0.75 coupon for the batteries. Bringing my total to $0.23! The total with tax was $1.22. I used the part of the remaining balance of a gift card I had to pay the tax. Therefore, I spent $0 out of pocket!

They do not expire until 12/31/09. Also, most of them contain no sugar, but are sweetened with either fruit and/or agave nectar! They are SO Delicious! Of course, I do not recommend eating soy. Family Dollar Coupon Match-Ups Expires 10/28/09

I am still not certain of Family Dollar’s actual coupon policy! Therefore, I have decided to delay posting their coupon match-ups until I have discovered the truth! I contacted their corporate office, but have not received a response regarding their coupon policy. I went to Family Dollar last Wednesday. I had called before I went. On the phone, I was told they accepted internet coupons and stacked store coupons and manufacturer coupons. When I went to pay for my purchase, the cashier would not accept the internet printed coupons, and I was told they did not accept internet coupons, AND I was not allowed to stack coupons. I asked to speak to the manager, but he/she was on lunch break. You can read a couponing experience from one of The Coupon Mommie’s readers here. Anyway, until I get a hard copy of the coupon policy, I will no longer be posting coupon match-ups for Family Dollar. You can see the full ad here.  Please let me know if any of you have access to the coupon policy.

Thanks for understanding! :)

Month of Chores in the Garden for October

Today I am beginning a new monthly post. I will try to post it at the end of the proceeding month or at the beginning of the month the chores are to begin. It will revolve around what you can be doing in your garden,  flower bed, on your farm, on your homestead, or even to your container plantings! Some of the things I suggest to do will not be suitable to certain Hardiness Zones. To find your hardiness zone go here. I am in East Tennessee and in Hardiness Zone 7. The date of the last killing frost is October 15. However, for the past few years it has been in late October and even in November! As I begin writing this article it is 80 degrees outside and very hot and humid! It really does not look like a frost anytime soon! Although, according to the weather forecast there may be one next week! In East Tennessee, we never know! :)

Here are the things I am going to be working on this month. For those of you who have a later frost date, you may be able to do more!

  • Feed the soil with manure, compost, and cover crops. Spread manure from barnyard animals directly on garden beds to compost during winter months!
  • Direct Seed in Garden
    1. Wildflowers
    2. Green Manure Cover crops (White Clover, Crimson Clover, Hairy Vetch, or Annual Rye)
  • Transplant
  1. Garlic Bulbs
  2. Perennial Herbs and Flowers if you have started them or if you have some which need to be changed to another location
  • Harvest (Assuming you started a fall garden or still have things to harvest from your summer garden)
  1. Peppers
  2. Carrots
  3. Beets
  4. Winter Squash
  5. Sweet Potatoes
  6. Lettuce
  7. Greens
  8. Cilantro
  9. Parsley
  • Cover plants with row covers before hard frost to extend harvest into winter months. You can use garbage bags, newspaper, other plastic covers, or even cardboard to protect from frost. Just remember to remove during the day!
  • Clean up and compost garden debris (weeds, left over vines, plants, etc. from harvest).
  • Drain and store hoses (very important to prevent water freezing in hoses and hoses bursting!).

If you have a later frost or NO frost you may be able to still do the following:

  • Collect and save mature, dry seed from non-hybrid varieties. Seal in air tight containers, label, and store in refrigerator or freezer. Let some herbs reseed themselves in the garden such as parsley, cilantro, and dill.
  • Direct Seed in Garden
  1. Spinach
  2. Leaf lettuces
  3. Chinese Cabbage
  4. Turnips
  5. Kohlrabi
  6. Radishes
  7. Parsley
  8. Cilantro
  9. Green manure cover crops (Crimson clover, White Dutch clover, hairy vetch, annual rye)
  • Transplant
  1. Divide and replant Egyptian Onions
  2. Divide and replant Spring Blooming bulbs
  3. Perennial Herbs and Glowers
  • Harvest
  1. Green beans
  2. Tomatoes
  3. Potatoes
  4. Peppers
  5. Carrots
  6. Crowder Peas
  7. Celery
  8. Radishes
  9. Okra
  10. Dried Beans
  11. Eggplant
  12. Winter Squash
  13. Pumpkins
  14. Salad Greens
  15. Arugula
  16. Lettuces
  17. Red Raspberries
  18. Apples
  19. Watermelon
  20. Herbs
  • Dry herbs and flowers (They make great fall bouquets to decorate your home!).
  • Mulch perennial beds, fruit trees, and berries.
  • Clean up garden debris and add to compost pile.

I hope these tips have helped you some. Please let me know if you have any questions. I will try to answer the best I can, or point you to someone who knows the answer!

Thanks for reading!

Dangers of Soy Foods

One of the most popular “health foods” on the market are soy based foods. However, soy is not really a health food! Yes, it is true! It is actually quite dangerous and there are many health cases to prove it! I am not a doctor or nutritionist. However, I have been eating naturally and organically for well over 10 years! I have also researched the effects and read many reputable articles on the effects of soy. In addition, I have had friends with health problems and the main link has been soy either as their source of food or as the main source of food for the meat they were consuming! Please research for yourself and do not only take my word for it!
Here are some of the most damaging effects of soy based foods.
  •   Soy foods increase the body’s requirement for Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption. Vitamin D deficiencies are also linked with chronic illness and low immune systems!
  • Soy foods increase the body’s requirement for vitamin B12.
B12 is another essential vitamin in keeping our immune systems healthy. It is also a main deficiency in those people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
  • Soy foods contain high levels of Aluminum.
Aluminum is toxic all the way around! It is toxic to the nervous system as well as the kidneys! Aluminum toxicity is also linked to Alzheimer's cases.
  • Soy phytoestrogens have the potential to cause infertility and promote breast cancer in women as they disrupt the endocrine function!
  • MSG is a toxic preservative found in many foods and is loaded with soy.
  • Soy foods contain trypsin inhibitors that inhibit protein digestion and affect pancreatic function. In test animals, diets high in trypsin inhibitors led to stunted growth and pancreatic disorders. Soy foods increase the body's requirement for vitamin D, needed for strong bones and normal growth. Phytic acid in soy foods results in reduced bioavailability of iron and zinc which are required for the health and development of the brain and nervous system. Soy also lacks cholesterol, likewise essential for the development of the brain and nervous system. Mega doses of phytoestrogens in soy formula have been implicated in the current trend toward increasingly premature sexual development in girls and delayed or retarded sexual development in boys.
  • Soy foods can cause deficiencies in calcium and magnesium.
  • Soy foods can stimulate the growth of estrogen-dependent tumors and cause thyroid problems.
Low thyroid function is associated with difficulties in menopause.
  • Most soybeans grown in the US are genetically engineered!
Genetic Engineering allows farmers to use large amounts of herbicides for their crops.
Some other sites to read for more information on soy are:
The Weston A. Price Foundation
Mercola.com
No Greater Joy article by Debi Pearl
Soy Online Service
Soy-A Very Dangerous Food
*Disclaimer: I encourage you to research this topic for yourself! I acknowledge before hand that I do not agree with everything these particular sites promote. However, their soy research is pretty much right on and I greatly appreciate it!*

Last night we had a quick tacos on Rice Tortillas. I fixed enough for leftovers tonight. I was gone all day and will be gone all day today as well!

Tomorrow night we are having chili and chips. A neighbor is coming over for her birthday. I am also making a German Chocolate Cake.

I am not sure about the rest of the week as we may or may not be home!

Our breakfasts have been quick on the go trail mixes containing nuts, dried fruit, and dry cereal.

Our lunches have been cheese sticks, celery sticks, apples, and carrots!

It is on the go week!

UGO Deals 10/07-10/10

Here are the UGO Deals for the week. Remember UGO specializes in closeouts and overstock. As a result, UGO has items at rock bottom prices and DO NOT accept manufacturer’s coupons. Remember, if you think something should be priced lower (i.e. expired date, damaged packaging, etc.) JUST ASK! Also, not all stores have fresh produce or meat. Let me know if you find any other deals! Go here for the complete ad.
